Trump Tariffs Updates: Anticipated Tariffs on Canada Paused for One Month

Following the delay of the additional tariff implementation on imports from Mexico for one month,  Canadian President JustinTrudeau just posted on “X” regarding the 30-day postponement of the proposed tariifs on imports from Canada.

According to President Trudeau:

“Just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.

In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.”

The  additional 10% tariffs from China, also announced by President Trump on Saturday, Feb. 1, with an effective time and date of 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Feb. 4, are still in place at the this time. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued their guidance to the trade this afternoon regarding implementation of the Chinese tariffs.

Trump Tariffs Updates: Anticipated Tariffs on Mexico Delayed for One Month

President Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on Social Media saying they had reached agreements on security and trade. The anticipated additional 25% tariffs on Mexico imports will be delayed for one month.

Trump wrote on “X”:

“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico.”

“I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a “deal” between our two Countries.”

There is still uncertainty if the 25% Canadian tariffs imposition will be implemented on Feb. 4th, as announced on Saturday, or if President Trump and Canadian President Justin Trudeau will also reach an agreement to pause those tariffs as well.

Flegenheimer International will continue to monitor the situation and keep you all posted.
