Reviewing your Import Process

When was the last time you took a long, hard look on your import procedure? Perhaps, you are one of those who wear multiple hats: Sales, Purchasing, Logistics, Accounting and last but not the least, Customs documentation. They are important information that talks about general import process you probably already know but could be used to re-assess your documents process and review the basic information on shipping documentation.

For instance, have you checked on the Airway Bill or Bill of Lading if Flegenheimer International is stated as the “Notify Party”? You may think that this may not be a big deal but in reality, by not having our name as the notify party, the airlines/carriers will not release the information that we need in order to process the clearance. They will not send us the Arrival Notice nor give us the arrival information. For air shipments, the airline will not release your cargo to your driver until they get a Letter of Authority from us. This will cause a delay on picking up your cargo. We normally get a call from the airline requesting for the Letter of Authority.

Another scenario that could cause a delay is if the (Shipper’s Load and Count (SLAC): SLAC refers to the “smallest external packaging unit” is not reported correctly in the Air Automated Manifest System in accordance to 19 CFR § 4.7a of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. When this happens, we have to contact the airline to update the SLAC count so that it will post the clearance (1C). Again, we know the urgency of having your cargo ready to be picked up as soon as the shipment arrives, and this is one of the reasons why we would like you to take a look at the important details on your import process.
